Ram skull on walnut wall art - gothic wall art

A black skull on a dark orange background.  How goth is that?!  This bespoke, handcrafted art piece is created from vintage burl wood, using staining techniques more commonly found on high-end guitars.  It showcases everything we know about doing creative stuff with reclaimed wood!
 
The old finish was removed, then a coat of black stain was applied. When this was dry, it was sanded back to leave just a hint of black, where the swirling burr pattens had absorbed it more.  Five coats of deep red stain later, it was ready for a trip to the laser for the ram skull engraving.  This was then hand-painted with several layers of Indian ink to give a deep contrast to the surrounding area; once dry, a coat of Danish oil was added, to deepen the contrast and protect the surface.  We then made the frame from more reclaimed timber, sprayed that black - and it was finally finished.
